About Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania or hypomania. The DSM-5-TR identifies three main types: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and cyclothymia.

Subtypes

  • Bipolar I — at least one manic episode
  • Bipolar II — recurrent depressive episodes with hypomania (no full mania)
  • Cyclothymia — chronic, milder mood fluctuations

Treatment

Bipolar disorder treatment typically involves mood-stabilizing medication management in combination with psychotherapy and ongoing monitoring.
