PTSD and Trauma Treatment
About PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in some people after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening or distressing event. Symptoms can include intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in mood and cognition, and changes in arousal and reactivity.
Evidence-Based Treatment
The most effective treatments for PTSD are trauma-focused psychotherapies, including:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
- Prolonged Exposure (PE)
When to Seek Help
If trauma-related symptoms persist more than a month after a distressing event and interfere with daily life, a clinical evaluation can determine the appropriate path forward.
